Another Classic Endgame by Nigel Richards

Witness the masterful endgame tactics delivered by Nigel Richards against Ricky Purnomo at the 2023 World Youth Cup Side Event held in Thailand this month of December. Other Scrabble Grandmasters would have calculated a different approach in this endgame, but Nigel did it insanely!

Round 13: Ricky Purnomo (Singapore) vs. Nigel Richards (New Zealand)

Ricky wrote in his Facebook page:

As promised, my endgame against Nigel, as a puzzle.

I just took the lead after BARDING. My previous move was the desperate opening AB, Nigel's play after that was the one tile T dump (ETA)T so I know he's up to no good.

So I bingoed and led 432-389. I emptied the bag and took DSV, Nigel held CEHIIQS.

What would you play?

I still don't know if Nigel's play sequence was the best (Quackle didn't seem to spot it), but it definitely was not what I was expecting and struck me dumb.

Round 15: Russell Honeybun (Australia) vs. Nigel Richards (New Zealand)

Russell with four bingos defeated the "Beard", 515-376!
Final Board Position: Round 15, Russell Honeybun vs. Nigel Richards

Round 16: Puttapong Moonsarn (Thailand) vs. Nigel Richards (New Zealand)

In this game, Nigel attempted to set-up his high point tiles, twice!

Round 17: Nigel Richards (New Zealand) vs. Russell Honeybun (Australia)

Napat V. vs. Liew Kian Boon at board 2, and Nigel R. vs. Russell H. at board 1

Nigel Richards defeated Russell Honeybun 451-355, while Napat V. had beaten Liew Kian Boon, 526-346 to move to top board in the next round.

Round 18: Napat Vatjaranuratho (Thailand) vs. Nigel Richards (New Zealand)

Napat commented that he started with exch. 4 keeping RAD, then he drew P?AC hoping that Nigel would put something like S at the star so he could lay down PLACARDS.

But Nigel played OSTRACA at h8 placing O at the star, and had played two more bingos, SNEERIER and TAPACOLO in succession.

Final Board Position: Round 18, Napat Vatjaranuratho vs. Nigel Richards

Final Score: Nigel R. 536, Napat V. 353

Round 19: Nigel Richards (New Zealand) vs. Ricky Purnomo (Singapore)

Ricky shared his amusing story that Nigel insisted on writing former's name as REEKY, so he also wrote Nigel's name as NIGGLE in his scoresheet. Take a look.
