Format: The tournament begins with a 27-round preliminary (round 1-24 based on Swiss pairing system, the round 25-27 based on King-of-the-Hill pairing system), whose two finalists to play final with special rules: They have to play two games. If one of them win both games, then that player is the winner. But if they tie with a win and a loss each, a third game will be played. The winner, in this case, is the one who scores the most points when the scores from all three games are combined. (Note: Throughout the tournament, the spread capping enforced to a maximum of -/+ 350 points spread in a game. Also the Gibson rule is in effect in case there is a player who has won enough games to guarantee 1st place or a seat in the finals no matter how many games he or she loses thereafter.)

Preliminary Rounds Day 1, 2, 3 and 4 Report (Excerpt from Ricky Purnomo's blog)
King's Cup First Day Results
Posted 30 June 2006
After 5 rounds, 4 players remained undefeated: Atiruth Sakdiyakorn (THA) with a monster spread of 852, Nigel Richards (NZ) on 612, Ishtiaq Chishty (PAK) 354, and Henry Yeo Kien Hung (MAL) 298. Highest debutante is Phillippines' new whiz kid Louie Mark U. De Guzman at 7th with 4-1 658. Singaporeans in top 10 were Cheah Siu Hean and Hubert Wee.

King's Cup Second Day Results
Posted 30 June 2006
Day 2 ended with 13 games played and a new leader. Komol emerged as the sole player on 11 wins after winning all eight games today, including one against previous leader Nigel Richards. Nigel lost another two games to Atiruth Sakdiyakorn and Ishtiaq Chishty (PAK). Panupol won all the games he played today, but he conceded a walkover in the first game of the day against Kum Zi Peng (Singapore) when he came late. Another climber was Femi Awowade (Nigeria) who won all but one game, losing round 10 to Amnuay Ploysangngam 464-497. On the side, one game was played for all spectators to see when Marut Siriwangso and Alastair Richards (Australia) played their game in round 11 on the giant board which is usually used to display the finals. Both players took turn running up the board to place their tiles. It helps that both are known fast players. Marut won 414-357. Tomorrow first table will see two Thais and two Singaporeans courtesy of the Swiss pairing: Komol vs Panupol and Cheah Siu Hean vs Tony, so the second game will be a Singapore vs Thai duel both sides when winner plays winner and loser plays loser.

King's Cup Third Day Results
Posted 1 July 2006
Cheah Siu Hean (SIN) thwarted Komol (THA) twice to keep the leader from the previous day in check, but it was Nigel (NZ) who benefited by virtue of better spread. Later on Nigel went on to beat Cheah in game 17 to claim sole leadership. Femi Awowade (NGR) continued his charge up the ranking from the day before. By round 17, he had strung together 4 wins today to add to his 3 yesterday, the last win against Pakorn when Pakorn under time pressure missed a simple bingo DOTAGES hooking to the only spot on the board, at the end of RAINWEAR. RAINWEARS is not good in OSPD, which was why Pakorn didn't play it. Femi's run came to a halt in the hands of Cheah Siu Hean, who throughout the day lost only two games, both to Nigel. However he did manage to end the day with a win against Nigel, to stay in touch with one win behind and one ahead of the rest of the field. Another person making a charge up was David Eldar (AUS), who after a 4-6 start (including a bye) and a negative spread, had won 10 straight including all 7 today to propel himself into the top 4. In the last game in the first table, David beat Femi to earn a match against Siu Hean in the first game tomorrow. David also won 3500 baht for winning all his games today, the only person who managed the feat.

In the meantime, a couple of nice plays reported to me so far: - Nigel Richards's EPIcLESES to the second ES against Marlon Prudencio (PHI) - Lim Li Wei (SIN)'s BALLOTEES through AL against, aptly, Kum Zi Peng (SIN) whose nickname is Ball.
Jakkrit Klaphajone (THA) played the natural GIILOTV [1] through an I. Some notable plays: - Jakkrit found one of the two 8s from ADEEPW? through an R [2] against Nigel in round 14. It didn't help him avert a 195 loss to Nigel. - Komol defeated Panupol with the help of one of the two 7s in BDIIOR? [3] - Jakkrit played AACHLMN through an O [4] against Aaron Chong (MAL), who was holding EGIJOU? and responded with the only bingo through one of the floaters Jakkrit provided [5] Answers at the end of the post.

King's Cup Final Day Results
Posted 2 July 2006
Nigel Richards (NZ) had locked in a spot in the finals for King's Cup 2006 with two games to go, after a titanic battle against Cheah Siu Hean in round 25. Nigel beat Cheah 547-482 in a game where both players got 4 bingos each: Cheah had CHAPMEN (90), HEADING (78), RETINULA (82), and HINDERER; Nigel got ISOTONIC (70), WARBLED (89) with R hooking RETINULAR, TzARITZA (102), and VEnOSITY (89). Seven of the bingos came by the 6th move of each player, and by then the board had drawn a crowd and a couple of cameramen. With his spot secure, Nigel was gibsonized and played Amnuay (THA) and then Michael Tang (SIN), to Cheah's relief. But by then the damage was done, he had lost 5 out of 7 games against Nigel, and lost his next game to Femi to lose his shot at the finals. Cheah lost 9 games the whole tournament and Nigel accounted for more than half of those. Femi proceded to beat David Eldar (AUS) to go into the finals.

Some other nice plays reported : - Taewan laid down nine-timer against Charnwit through a P as the second letter, holding AHIOST? [6] - Komol played a natural nine letter through TE holding ABILOSV [7] against Charnwit.

Game 3
Nigel Richards won against Femi in the final round 556 - 346 . Femi started well with early FLISKED and then AXIOM (60). However, he missed ADMIX (78), and on the next turn played LIVID (18) missing FULVID (42). But it might not have mattered, since Nigel blew past with GLASSED, SOLANIN, OPAQUEr (hooking O to form OD and E to SOLANINE), and BEATERs.
